Power starved South Africa is set to get atleast 100 megawatts of electricity from neighbouring Mozambique.

Kgosientsho Ramakgopa, the Minister in Presidency who is responsible for electricity met with Mozambique’s Energy and Mineral Resources Minister Carlos Zacarias to discuss the deal.

The Minister revealed that Mozambique could add another 500 megawatts in the next six months with the aim to reach 1000 megawatts in future.

South Africa which is considered as one of the leading economies in Africa has been facing intense load shedding which at times lasts up to 16 hours a day.

The deal is aimed at easing power shortages in the country. Mozambique has the capacity, its Hydro power station at Cahora Bassa is the largest in Southern Africa.

After the meeting at Union Buildings in Pretoria, the Minister said Eskom and Electricidade Moçambique will engage on the outstanding issues, but for now the goal was to easy load shedding.
