There was drama on Day 1 of the COSATU Federation’s annual Congress today when the ANC Chairman and Energy Minister Gwede Mantashe took to the stage to address the members.

Mantashe was prevented from giving his address by a group of unhappy delegates. They sang, “hamba Gwede” which means “go Gwede”,. “Asila mali”, they said which means “we have no money.”

It was an embarrassing moment showing a sign of a dipper rift between alliance partners. Mantashe was booed and heckled in front of other senior members.

The Minister was to deliver a message on behalf of ANC President Cyril Ramaphosa who was in Soweto attending an event in honour of late struggle stalwart Winnie Mandela.
