Medical Doctor Zime Shabalala joined Afternoon Express to share her knowledge on albinism and it’s causes.

Dr Zime said albinism was a genetic disorder that one gets at birth. She added that the cause was lack in the production of melanin in the body.

She also said melanin is usually found on skin, hair and eyes, therefore since it’s a genetic disorder it’s caused by genes and nothing else. She said the condition can be passed on to offspring by parents.

Dr Zime also revealed that there was no cure for albinism but there was treatment for symptoms associated with albinism.

She added that people living with albinism tend to have visual difficulties and if exposed to the sun they can develop skin cancer.

She concluded by saying there was need to educate people about albinism and to stop the stigmatisation of those who live with the condition.
