Masasa Mbangeni joined Afternoon Express to chat about her conniving character Thembeka Shezi on Scandal and her journey as an actress.

She revealed that she was inspired into being an actress by Pamela Nomvethe who played the role of Ntsiki on SABC 1 soapie Generations.

Masasa said she knew that she wanted to be an actress at the young age of 8 years. Her mother introduced her to speech and drama when she was a little girl.

She applied at Wits University to study a BA in Performing and Directing. A producer from Scandal spotted her when she was showcasing her monologue at Wits.

The producer called her to come join Scandal and she joined without having an audition. After proving herself Masasa’s character Thembeka was promoted to a leading role.

She became a villain and a darling to some fans in the South African entertainment industry. Masasa Mbangeni was nominated for the SAFTAs twice and she finally won it.

Masasa Mbangeni also revealed that she was dragged constantly on social media by those who hated her character. She suddenly lost her father at the same time. All these overwhelmed her and she ended up suffering from depression.
