South African president Cyril Ramaphosa is saddened with the passing of former President F.W De Klerk who passed away in the morning today. De Klerk was aged 85 and he succumbed to cancer.

The President said he received a message from De Klerk’s widow Elita De Klerk informing him about the sad passing of F.W De Klerk. Ramaphosa expressed his condolences and the government’s condolences to Elita, the children and to the De Klerk family.

He went on to say the passing of De Klerk was so saddening because the late head of state ushered democracy in South Africa. He said De Klerk had the courage to step away from Apartheid which had been enforced by the National Party.

He added that De Klerk will be remembered for the part he played in the politics of the county. He said Apartheid polices had wrecked havoc on millions of South Africans.

Ramaphosa concluded by saying that it is important to let De Klerk rest. He said the government is ready to work with the De Klerk family aswell as his Foundation in arranging his funeral.

Our deepest condolences to Elita De Klerk and the De Klerk family. May they be comforted during this difficult time and may De Klerk’s soul rest in eternal peace.
