NewsRoom Afrika has reported that former South African president F.W. De Klerk has passed away at the age of 85. The former head of state succumbed to cancer.

De Klerk was President of South Africa from 1989 to 1994 when the new government of Nelson Mandela came to power.

A statement from the former President F.W. De Klerk Foundation revealed that he died at his home in Cape Town.  He was diagnosed with cancer this year.

The now late President is survived by his wife Elita, his children Jan and Susan and his grandchildren. Our deepest condolences to his family, friends and his close associates. May Mr De Klerk’s soul rest in eternal peace.
