Former Public Protector Thuli Madonsela has been knighted by the French President Emmanuel Macron.

She has been appointed as knight of the Legion of Honour. The French Legion of Honour celebrates accomplishments of distinguished individuals iregardless of race, gender and more.

It was established by Napoleon Bonaparte in 1802 and it is regarded as the highest decoration in France.

Thuli Madonsela is being honoured in recognition of her remarkable achievements in defending the rule of law and in the fight against corruption in South Africa.

Madonsela who is the current Chair in the Faculty of Law in Social Justice at Stellenbosch University said she was so grateful to the president and the people of France.

She also said that she was accepting the honour on behalf of the Public Protector team that worked with her in pursuing ethical and accountable governance for seven years.

Nelson Mandela, Archbishop Desmond Tutu, Miriam Makeba, Ahmed Kathrada and more are some of the honorary recipients from South Africa.
