Today South Africa says goodbye to one of its most imminent Human Rights Activists, Advocate George Bizos.

George Bizos is being laid to rest in a special state official funeral today. Bizos passed on last week at the age of 92.

The funeral took place at the Greek Orthodox Church in Johannesburg. This was the first Orthodox Church in South Africa built in 1908.

The human rights advocate is a stalwart who helped and fought for the rights of the marginalised black South Africans during the Apartheid regime.

George Bizos funeral is a state funeral therefore a lot of political figures are expected to attend including President Cyril Ramaphosa. He will be laid to rest at Westpark Cemetery.

Bizos represented the late President Nelson Mandela and other struggle icons at the Rivonia trial. He also represented Chris Hani and Steve Biko’s families.
