Renowned Human Rights Lawyer George Bizos has died at the age of 92. Bizos was an Anti-Apartheid human rights lawyer who fought for the rights of the marginalised.

President Cyril Ramaphosa said he spoke to George Bizos two months ago and he revealed that his health was not in good shape.

Ramaphosa said the news of George Bizos’ passing is sad news for all South Africans. The President revealed that Bizos contributed immensely to the attainment of democracy in South Africa.

The President also sent condolences to the Bizos family and paid tribute to George Bizos on behalf of all South Africans.

Bizos represented the late President Nelson Mandela during the Rivonia Trial and more. He continued working closely with Mandela even after independence.

In 1994 Bizos was appointed to the Judicial Commission by Nelson Mandela. In 1979 he founded the Legal Resources Center where he fought for those struggling to get their rights.

George Bizos also represented a lot of political figures on trials including Walter Sisulu, Winnie Mandela, Steve Biko and Chris Hani’s families. He also represented Morgan Tsvangirai of Zimbabwe.
