Businessman and radio host Gareth Cliff has responded to the backlash over his open letter to President Cyril Ramaphosa where he claimed that those who thought he was speaking for white people are making it all about him and not the issues he raised in the letter.

The radio host said South Africans’ “Patience and emotional state of affairs are on a knife edge” during the national lockdown and many were losing hope.

He added that a lot of people are no longer afraid of the virus anymore. He claimed that the lockdown was wreaking havoc on the economy, people’s lives and livelihoods.

He told listeners of his Cliff Central show this week that he was not speaking for white people but himself. He also claimed some people shared his sentiments but did not get the same amount of backlash, claiming that because they are not white.

Gareth also slammed claims that he was being disrespectful to the President and said he had nothing personal to gain from his open letter. He also added that he was not speaking on behalf of people with money.

Many celebrities and radio hosts called him out. Hulisani Ravele said Gareth’s open letter had angered her and left her emotional. Sizwe Dlomo also called out on Gareth, calling him hazardous.
