South Africa’s former president Jacob Zuma has been under fire for spending about US$23 million on the upgrade of his Nkandla home in KwaZuluNatal.

The government has insisted that the upgrades at Zuma’s rural home were purely for security reasons. However satellite images revealed an amphitheater, cattle enclosure, chicken run and a swimming pool.

A satellite image of the place in 2006 showed a collection of few buildings on the site, however by 2010 the number of buildings on the land had doubled.

When Zuma was sworn in as President in 2009 it was agreed that a security upgrade was required at his home. A security fence encircling the residence was erected.

A football pitch and helipads were also added on the residence. The Public Protector Thuli Madonsela revealed that Zuma had benefited unduly from the tax payers’ money for the non security installations at his residence.
