Former South African president Thabo Mbeki has paid tribute to the late Zambian former president Kenneth Kaunda. He described Kaunda as a people’s leader.

He lauded Kenneth Kaunda as a principled man with a forgiving heart and a person who could communicate with people from all corners of the world.

Mbeki gave an example where a mercenary from New Zealand came to Lusaka with a mission to place a bomb underneath Mbeki’s car so that he could be blown up as he starts the car.

The mercenary was caught by the Zambian police and had to spend some couple of months behind prison bars.

Kaunda then decided to release him saying the Prime Minister of New Zealand and New Zealand was against Apartheid in South Africa.

Thus Kaunda would not let a mercenary to embarrass New Zealand and its leader. Mbeki concluded by saying Kaunda was a very humane person with a soft heart.

May the soul of Kenneth Kaunda, the former president of Zambia rest in eternal peace. Our condolences to the Kaunda family, their friends and Zambia as a whole.
