There is a diamond rush in KwaZuluNatal Province as people in a tiny community of KwaHlathi near Ladysmith discovered a spot they believe is rich in diamonds.

The KZN Provincial government raised concerns about illegal mining activities in the area following the discovery of what some believe to be the precious gem.

Lennox Mabaso, who is the KZN provincial government, spokesperson said they are aware of the situation.

He added that they have tasked the Department of Development, Tourism and Environmental Affairs to refer the matter to the national Department of Minerals and Energy so that the issue is dealt with.

He revealed that the Department of Minerals and Energy promised to send a team to the site. KZN Premier Sihle Zikalala said if the situation was not brought under control it could result into chaos.

She called for order and calm in the area urging those involved in the operations to stop their illegal activities. Zikalala said the illegal miners could be breaking Covid-19 regulations.
