Embattled former eThekwini Mayor Zandile Gumede and 21 other accused are expected to appear before the Durban High Court for a pre-trial hearing today.

The charges stem from a 2017 Durban Solid Waste tender amounting to over R400 million. Supporters of former eThekwini Mayor Zandile Gumede are expected to show solidarity as her corruption case resumes.

Her supporters have always been adamant that she is innocent and that charges leveled against her are politically motivated.

Ntando Khuzwayo who is the spokesperson for Zandile Gumede supporters said atleast 250 people are going to be at the court to support Gumede since the Covid-19 regulations allow only such a number of people to gather at once.

Zandile Gumede is expected to run as an ANC chairperson for the eThekwini region. Khuzwayo said the case was not in any way affecting Gumede’s nomination.

He said Gumede was way ahead of other contestants therefore they are so confident that she will become the chairperson of the eThekwini region which is an ANC stronghold.

When Gumede was arrested she stepped down as Mayor of eThekwini and a few months later she was sworn in as a member of the KZN Provincial legislature.
