Ford Motor Corporation (FORD), has invested a further R16 Billion in a new body shop, sheet metal stamping facility and paint shop in the Tshwane Special Economic Zone.

Upgrades will also be made to the box line, paint shop, and final assembly.

The new investment will increase production capacity to 200 000 units per year from the current 168 000 units.

Ford said it plans to make the silverton plant the first energy self sufficient plant in the world.

Ford announced the new investment at a briefing attended by President Cyril Ramaphosa,  Ministers Ebrahim Patel and Pravin Gordhan and Gauteng Premier,  David Makhura.

After this investment,  Ford will account for over 1% of South Africa ‘s Gross Domestic Product (GDP).
