Former eThekwini Mayor Zandile Gumede’s swearing in as a member of KwaZuluNatal’s Provincial Legislature has drawn the ire of opposition parties and many in South Africa.

Despite being linked to a fraud case involving a R400 million tender when she was still the Mayor of eThekwini, ANC has defended its decision.

The former Mayor said she was no longer a councillor and that ANC was not blind but rather a caring organisation. She said the court has failed to charge her since last year.

She added that she was a servant of the people and her will is to continue serving the people. Zandile Gumede said this was not a reward on her part.

Gumede revealed that it was her political opponents and the media that wanted her name tainted since she was the first ANC female Mayor of eThekwini.
