Former eThekwini Mayor Zandile Gumede returned to the Durban Commercial Crimes Court today.

Gumede and seventeen others are facing fraud and corruption charges involving a close to R400 Million Durban Solid Waste Tender Scandal.

Gumede was implicated in this tender soon after taking the Mayoral office back in 2016. Other high profile officials including the City Manager Sipho Nzuza and Chairperson of Infrastructure Committee Mondli Mthembu were also at the court to answer to the same charges.

Gumede relinquished her position as Mayor last year after being sent on forced leave by ANC. It’s been over a year and the National Prosecuting Authority has not yet presented any tangible charges against the accused persons.

Mzomhle Dube who spoke on behalf of Zandile’s supporters said the allegations were baseless and he called for the withdrawal of the charges.

He added that this was a miscarriage of justice and called on the court to dismiss the allegations which he claimed were aimed at tarnishing Zandile’s political career.
