Popular Xitsonga-Xichangana music pioneer, Samson Mthombeni has been laid to rest at Nwaxinyami village outside Louis Trichardt in Limpopo.

Mthombeni died after an illness and he was aged 74. He carved his music career it the early 70s. The funeral takes place at a time when the country is battling Covid-19.

He is regarded as the first musician to record an album in Xitsonga-Xichangana 49years ago. He also performed in the United Kingdom during his career.

The bereaved family members say they will work hard to ensure that they will adhere to the lockdown regulations. His funeral could have pulled large crowds of people if the situation was different.

The funeral was attended by 49 people because the lockdown regulations prohibit vigils and gatherings of more than 50 people.

The mouners were also being advised to observe social distancing to avoid the spread of the coronavirus pandemic.
