Pitso Mosimane Rejects R5 Million SAFA Salary Offer

Safa made a verbal offer of R5-million per year (approx. R417,000 per month) to Pitso Mosimane to become Bafana Bafana head coach.
Mosimane’s camp rejected the offer, calling it “disrespectful” to a coach of his calibre.
They pointed out that Safa paid him more than this in 2010 when he was previously Bafana head coach, and even when he was an assistant in 2007.

He demands a package comparable to that of outgoing coach Hugo Broos.
He also wants to bring his three trusted technical assistants, with the entire group’s remuneration negotiated as one comprehensive technical package.

Broos earned a monthly salary of $75,000 (approx. R1.4-million).
He also received:
- R70,000 per month for accommodation in Sandton.
- Return flights to Belgium as part of his package.
Total monthly package for Broos was estimated at over R1-million, with some reports suggesting R1.5-million per month.

Bafana Bafana (2010): Earned R800,000 per month in his first stint as head coach.
Mamelodi Sundowns (2020): Earned R1.55 million per month (plus bonuses) just before leaving for Egypt.
Al Ahly (Egypt, 2020–2022): Earned $1.44 million annually (approx. R2 million per month), with expected increases after winning Champions League titles.
Al Ahli Jeddah (Saudi Arabia, 2022–2023): Earned $1.66 million annually (approx. R2.7 million per month).

Safa’s R5-million annual offer (~R417,000/month) is:
- Far lower than his Sundowns salary (R1.55m/month).
- Far lower than his Egyptian and Saudi earnings (R2m–R2.7m/month).
- Even lower than his own Bafana salary from 2010 (R800k/month).
- Significantly lower than Broos’ reported monthly package (R1m–R1.5m/month).

Despite the gap, Mosimane and his team have shown a willingness to start work immediately (as early as Monday) without drawing any salary, while negotiations continue in good faith.

His camp stresses that the proposal is a commitment to South African football, not a reflection of their market value.
They do not want remuneration to become an obstacle to serving the national team.
They also do not want any failure to agree on terms to be misinterpreted as a lack of willingness on their part.

Mosimane’s agent, Moira Tlhagale, could not be reached for comment.
Safa referred Sunday World to its earlier statement confirming Mosimane’s appointment, without addressing the financial dispute.
