South African publicist, DJ, fashion designer, and cultural icon Maria McCloy, passed away on May 12, 2026, at age 50.
She died at Milpark Hospital in Johannesburg due to heart failure. Her family confirmed the news, describing her as a kind, warm, and generous person who brought people together through art, culture, music, and entertainment.
McCloy was a major figure in Johannesburg’s (and South Africa’s) creative scene for decades. She worked as a publicist (often in music and entertainment), co-founded Black Rage Productions, launched platforms like Rage.co.za, and was involved in TV shows, record labels, and Afrocentric fashion/accessories design. She collaborated with artists like Thandiswa Mazwai, Sjava, Somi, Nakhane, and others, and was seen as a “cultural heartbeat” or “mayor of culture” in Jozi.
Tributes have poured in from the music, fashion, media, and arts communities, highlighting her role in shaping post-apartheid youth culture (kwaito, hip-hop, etc.) and her vibrant, connective personality. Services are being planned, and she is survived by her mother and sisters Thandiwe and Natasha.
She was born in the UK in 1976 to an English father and a Mosotho mother, and grew up across several African countries before settling in Lesotho and later South Africa.
