Royal Bhaca is trending again due to renewed discussion and media attention surrounding the 2020 scandal in which the company was awarded a questionable multimillion-rand tender for personal protective equipment (PPE). The company, owned by the late Chief Thandisizwe Diko, the husband of then-presidential spokesperson Khusela Diko, was linked to irregular contracts from the Gauteng health department. In 2021, the SIU also implicated Royal Bhaca in a scheme to defraud the Industrial Development Corporation (IDC) of R30 million.

The SIU investigated the matter and found that contracts worth R43 million had been irregularly awarded to Royal Bhaca . It also flagged that Diko had failed to disclose her financial interests.

  • The Special Investigating Unit (SIU) froze bank accounts belonging to Royal Bhaca and other entities linked to the irregular PPE tenders.
  • Khusela Diko was placed on special leave from her position and later resigned after being found guilty by the ANC of bringing the party into disrepute.
  • Bandile Masuku was discharged from his position as Health MEC by the Gauteng premier.
