The remains of the Democratic Republic of Congo’s first Prime Minister Patrice Lumumba, have been laid to rest at a grand ceremony in the capital Kinshasa.

A tooth believed to be of Lumumba’s only remains was buried more than 60 years after his assassination.

Officials hailed him as a nationalist who helped end Belgian colonial rule. The ceremony was held on the 62nd celebrations of DRC’s independence.

Lumumba became the first Prime Minister of the Democratic Republic of Congo and he was assassinated in 1961 by serpatists working with Belgian officials.

His body was dismembered and dissolved in acid, only his tooth is believed to have remained. The tooth was recently handed over to DRC officials by Belgian officials.

In 2002 Belgium admitted to having a hand in Patrice Lumumba’s killing.
