Veli Ngcongwane (40) and electrician from Ratanda township, Heildeberg, killed three of his five children Katleho (13), Lehlohonolo, Teboho (6) after he gave them poisoned energy drinks. Veli had earlier questioned his wife, Ntswaki Khoabane (33), about the partenity of one of the children.
Neo (11) is fighting for his life in hospital while Thato (8), is the only child who refused to drink the energy drink.
Ntswaki told the Sunday World Newspaper that Veli had questioned her about the paternity of the child after the child was told by friends that her father lived at a nearby farm and was not Veli.
After he heard the news, a frustrated Veli refused to go to work for four days. On Thursday 26 May 2022, Veli gave the children the poisoned energy drinks. Katleho and Lehlehonolo died at Ratanda Primary school where Ntswaki also works as a cook, while Teboho died at a local clinic.
Veli attempted to kill himself after poisoning the children, after he slit his own throat and wrists with a broken bottle.
