SABC NEWS reported that the Judicial Service Commission has recommended Justice Mandisa Maya as the next Chief Justice.

This comes after the four candidates of Chief Justice were interviewed. The JSC has been meeting for the past five days and the first four days was occupied by interviews of the four candidates.

The fifth day was set aside for deliberations, however Advocate Dali Mpofu said the deliberations took longer than anticipated as the candidates were all of high standards and quality.

Mpofu said, “After much deliberation the JSC has come to the decision to recommend that the President appoints Justice Mandisa Maya, the President of the Supreme Court of Appeal to be the next Chief Justice of South Africa”.

Other candidates included Justice Raymond Zondo who has been the acting as Chief Justice following the retirement of Justice former Chief Mogoeng Mogoeng.
