Former Orlando Pirates and Bafana Bafana soccer star Patrick Phungwayo has been arrested by the Hawks for house breaking, hijacking and armed robbery.
Phungwayo is suspected of involvement in multiple armed robberies, hijackings and thefts in the Lombardy East area.
The 33 year old former Bidvest defender was also found with a stolen Plasma television. Phungwayo and two other robbers were found in possession of three illegal firearms and house breaking equipment.
Balaclavas and fake car registration plates were also recovered when their Audi was busted. The trio were arrested near Alexandra in Johannesburg.
Phungwayo and his friend appeared at the Johannesburg Magistrate’s court yesterday, 18 November 2021. The case was postponed to Thursday next week for a bail application.
Phungwayo and his accomplices were found in possession of an Audi and a Kia, both of which had false number plates. The Kia was stolen in July from its owner who lives in Linden.
Phungwayo is the second former Pirates player to be in the public eye for crime in recent months.
Another former player, Lucky Maselesele was killed by a mob in Alexandra in October 2021 after being caught by residents stealing electrical cables.
