On 5 August President Cyril Ramaphosa announced changes to his national executive. He said his changes were aimed at rebuilding the economy following violence in KwaZuluNatal and Gauteng last month as well as effects of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Some vacancies which needed to be filled include that of the late Minister Jackson Mthembu. The president said another vacant came after Health Minister Zweli Mkhize requested to resign.

Ramaphosa also accepted Finance Minister Tito Mboweni’s request to be excused from his post as South Africa’s Minister of Finance.

Thandi Modise was appointed Minister of Defence, Joe Phaahla as Minister of Health, Tourism was given to Lindiwe Sisulu while Senzo Mchunu was appointed Minister of Water and Sanitation.

Enoch Godongwana was appointed as Minister of Finance and Mondli Gungubele as Minister in the Presidency. Police Minister Bheki Cele survived the chopping block and remains in his position.
