Katiso “KT” Molefe is a South African businessman and alleged crime boss currently facing trial on multiple murder charges, including the high-profile killing of musician Oupa “DJ Sumbody” Sefoka. His case, which involves four co-accused, has been transferred to the High Court for trial in February 2026.
Background and Career
Before becoming a controversial figure linked to an alleged organised crime syndicate, Molefe held several public sector positions.
- Public Service: He worked as a Provincial Manager at the National Lotteries Board (NLB) and held roles at the Department of Trade and Industry (thedti) and the National Research Foundation (NRF).
- Education: He holds a bachelor’s degree in economics from the University of Johannesburg and pursued a Master’s in Development Studies at the University of Limpopo. He is also reportedly a qualified teacher.
- Business: In his business dealings, primarily in real estate and hospitality, he built a reputation in Gauteng business circles.
He is accused of orchestrating several contract killings, with ballistics evidence allegedly linking high-calibre rifles used in the murder of DJ Sumbody to other victims, including businessman Hector “DJ Vintos” Buthelezi and engineer Armand Swart.
Investigations and testimony before the Madlanga Commission have linked Molefe to an alleged “Big Five” criminal cartel accused of infiltrating the police and justice system.
After being initially denied bail by the Alexandra Magistrates’ Court, the Johannesburg High Court granted him R400,000 bail in October 2025. This decision was met with disappointment from the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA), which maintains the charges are serious and linked to organised crime.
Molefe remains out on R500,000 bail as of December 2025, while his trial is pending.
