Former Public Enterprises Minister Malusi Gigaba has appeared before the Palm Ridge Magistrate’s Court facing a charge of corruption of a controversial locomotive deal during his tenure.

Gigaba appeared in court alongside four other accused individuals involved in the controversial R54 billion Transnet locomotive procurement deal. The specific charges are believed to include corruption, fraud, and potentially money laundering, stemming from his tenure as Public Enterprises Minister between 2010 and 2014.

Previously, around November 7, 2025, Gigaba had met with the National Prosecuting Authority’s (NPA) Investigating Directorate Against Corruption (IDAC) after receiving a summons. At that time, IDAC clarified that he had not been arrested and there was no immediate court appearance scheduled. His appearance today represents a formal progression of the case.

The charges are a result of recommendations from the State Capture Commission (Zondo Commission), which found that Gigaba’s actions had enabled the Gupta family to influence appointments and procurement processes at state-owned entities like Transnet. The commission recommended further investigation and potential prosecution.

Gigaba has consistently denied any wrongdoing, stating that his actions were always guided by policy and that his conscience is clear. He has pledged full cooperation with the legal process.
