Sabelo Thamsanqa Moyo, the 58-year-old chairperson of Soweto’s MDN Taxi Association and the Gauteng National Taxi Alliance, who was shot and killed last week on the Soweto Highway in Diepkloof will be buried today.
Moyo was known as a peacemaker within the taxi industry, facilitating difficult conversations between taxi associations who did not see any need to move around with body guards. His family describes him as someone who “had a vision for a taxi industry” and glued the family together.
The family is seeking justice for his death, especially since their father also died in a similar manner while involved in the taxi industry. The MEC for Transport in Gauteng, Kedibone Diale, has condemned the act and called for taxi associations to engage in conversations rather than violence.
On Tuesday, 23 September, Gauteng National Taxi Alliance officials visited the family in Dube to pay their respects and finalize funeral arrangements. NTA spokesperson Theo Malele described Moyo’s death as a major blow to the taxi industry, saying they will remain united and support the family during this difficult time. Most of the visiting taxi bosses were accompanied by heavily armed bodyguards.
