The SABC goes on to mention its legislative and editorial policies, stating that they are in place to ensure a “plurality of views and a variety of news and information” and to “build trust with the public.”
The incident stems from a recent SABC News interview with activist and author Dr. Mamphela Ramphele. During the interview, the news presenter’s “conduct” was deemed problematic by SABC News management.
The central conflict:
- Dr. Ramphele was a guest on the show to discuss the Israeli-Gaza war.
- She drew a comparison between the “ghastly pictures of famine” in Gaza and “the pictures of emaciated Jews who survived concentration camps during the Second World War.” She referred to the situation in Gaza as a “Holocaust.”
- The news presenter challenged this comparison, calling it “provocative” and stating that the two events were “different.”
