Kings of Joburg Season 3, which premiered on 13 June 2025, has been a big hit on neftlix South Africa and shot up to number on its release. Critics and viewers alike have noted that Season 3 is bolder and more menacing, with supernatural elements such as glowing eyes becoming more prominent, adding a fresh intensity to the series.

Season 3 marks a significant evolution from the series’ beginnings in December 2020. Since Season 1, which introduced us to the Masire family’s criminal empire under Simon Masire (Shona Ferguson), the show has grown into a complex saga of power struggles, supernatural curses, and family betrayals.

Season 3 opens with Veronica Masire stepping into the spotlight as the new bearer of the family curse, taking up the mantle of leadership left behind by her brother. Veronica’s rule signals a fresh dynamic in the storyline, emphasizing legacy and the heavy burden of power. The season explores the consequences of an audacious and illogical deal struck by the reigning King of Joburg to take over the notorious King of Cape Town’s empire, unleashing a deadly chain of events that even Mo Masire (Zolisa Xaluva) struggles to control.

The storyline has expanded considerably since Season 1’s foundation of crime and supernatural mystery. Season 2 deepened the family’s internal conflicts and introduced new characters such as a long-lost sister and a detective investigating the Masires. Now, Season 3 raises the stakes with a full-blown war between rival criminal empires and the intensification of mystical elements tied to the family curse. The supernatural powers, including those linked to a mermaid, continue to play a central role in shaping the fate of the Masire family.

The Masire Family

The Kings of Joburg series centers around the powerful Masire family, beginning with Simon “Vader” Masire (Shona Ferguson), the formidable patriarch and crime kingpin of Johannesburg. Simon is the eldest brother to Mogomotsi “Mo” Masire (Zolisa Xaluva), who rises to prominence after Simon’s disappearance, and Veronica Masire (Connie Ferguson), Simon’s twin sister with mystical ties as the Masire Mermaid.

Angela Masire (Buhle Samuels), Simon’s wife, plays a key role in family affairs, often cautious of Mo’s growing influence. Mo’s romantic partner, Phumzi (Cindy Mahlangu), adds complexity to family dynamics, while their son Tlotlo Masire (TK Sebothoma) is an ambitious young man eager to carve out his own power within the empire. Law enforcement figures like Agent Stan Mazibuko (Sello Sebotsane), Phumzi’s uncle, and detective Jazmine Gumede (Tsholofelo Matshaba) maintain a complicated relationship with the family, balancing loyalty and investigation.

The extended Masire clan includes respected elder Uncle Taledi (Sello Maake Ka-Ncube) and other family members such as Keneilwe Masire (Thembi Seete). Throughout Seasons 2 and 3, new characters like Sting (Nnekwa Tsajwa) emerge as antagonists, challenging the Masire dominance.

Supporting associates such as Lester (Abdul Khoza), Ayanda (Edmund Ngema), Cyrus (Sthembiso Khoza), Mimi (Busiswe Twala), Leon (Llewellyn Cordier), and Gail Basia (Altovise Lawrence) further enrich the intricate web of alliances and rivalries that define the family’s struggle for control over Johannesburg’s underworld. Together, these characters weave a complex narrative of loyalty, betrayal, power, and supernatural intrigue that drives the series forward.

In terms of cast, the series has seen some poignant changes. The late Shona Ferguson’s absence is felt deeply, as his character Simon Masire’s legacy now drives much of the narrative tension. Connie Ferguson has taken over showrunning duties, ensuring the series honors Shona’s vision while steering it into new territory. Zolisa Xaluva returns as Mo Masire, still grappling with his role in the family’s criminal empire and the supernatural forces at play. Cindy Mahlangu continues as Phumzi, while new characters have been introduced to enrich the story’s complexity, including Veronica Masire as a powerful new lead.
