Ousted Johannesburg Mayor Mpho Phalatse is reportedly consulting with others about the possibility of challenging John Steenhuisen, for the leadership of the Democratic Alliance Party.

She told Newzroom Afrika that several party members have endorsed her for the leadership.

The DA will have its Congress in April 2023, that is where Phalatse is planning to avail herself for election.

She joined the party in 2015 and she believes its now time to climb the ladder. Steenhuisen has a strong grip on the Party’s structures.

Phalatse has been in the news since her election as Mayor of Johannesburg in 2021. She fought hard to remain in office after ANC and its allies tried to remove her from the position.

Steenhuisen became leader of the party following the resignation of Mmusi Maimane in 2019. Mpho Phalatse is reportedly popular in Johannesburg and has no support outside of the city.
