General Fannie Masemola who is the National Commissioner of the South African Police Services is saddened with the passing of two members and a K9 due to KZN Floods.

Sergeant Busisisiwe Mjwara who was a member of the Pietermaritzburg Search and Rescue Police Driving Unit was killed in line of duty during a search operation in the KZN Floods.

Mjwara and SAR K9 Leah from Durban Central Search and Rescue unit drowned earlier this week while conducting a search in the Msunduzi River.

The 42 year old was airlifted to a nearby hospital but she was declared dead on arrival. Leah died as she tried to rescue Sergeant Mjwara.

Another victim is Constable Thandazile Sithole who was attached to the Durban Central Police station.

The 31 year old died when her home collapsed on her earlier this week. Close to 30 police officers have been affected by the floods.

Masemola thanked the deceased members for their service to the country. He also sent his  heartfelt condolences to the deceased’s families, friends and colleagues.
