  • Tony Govender, a 54-year-old businessman and former Navy officer from Umhlanga, celebrates his 54th birthday.

  • Friday, 29 May 2026 – He is at Hazelmere Dam (north of Durban) with family and friends for a birthday outing. Strong winds cause a jet ski to drift away. Tony enters the water to retrieve it, disappears beneath the surface, and does not come back up. He is presumed drowned.
    A search and rescue operation begins the same day but is later called off due to bad weather.

  • Saturday, 30 May 2026 – The search resumes in the morning.

  • Sunday, 31 May – Monday, 1 June 2026 – Search and recovery continue. Tony’s wife and children keep vigil on the dam’s banks.

  • Tuesday, 2 June 2026 (morning) – After five days, police search teams recover Tony Govender’s body.
