An internal power struggle has Brocken out within the ANC Youth League (ANCYL), with the President, Collen Malatji, and the Secretary-General, Mntuwoxolo Ngudle, each issuing letters to suspend the other. The situation is currently unresolved, and the ANC’s national leadership is reportedly intervening.
The conflict escalated into a “catfight” where Ngudle, in a letter, declared Malatji suspended, while Malatji reportedly announced Ngudle’s precautionary suspension in a separate meeting.
Collen Malatji has publicly denied being suspended, stating the claims are untrue.
The ANCYL’s National Spokesperson, Zama Khanyase, has stated that no one has been officially suspended yet and that a meeting is underway to discuss the matter.
ANC Secretary-General Fikile Mbalula has reportedly summoned the feuding leaders to a meeting to intervene in the public spat, with sources suggesting the suspension letters are likely to be retracted after the meeting.
The infighting is linked to factionalism and disputes over preparations for an early elective conference scheduled for December in Limpopo. Ngudle is ineligible for re-election at this conference as he has aged out of the youth league.
