In a dramatic and heartening development, 19-year-old Kamogelo Baukudi, a Grade 11 learner from Bloemfontein, has been found alive after being kidnapped more than three weeks ago. The young student was abducted on June 5, 2025, by men posing as police officers while on his way home from school. His safe recovery marks a significant relief for his family, community, and the entire Free State province.

The Rescue Operation

Kamogelo was located early on Friday morning, June 27, 2025, in Wepener, a small town in the Free State, following an intelligence-driven police operation. Five suspects, aged between 20 and 29, were arrested during the rescue. Three were apprehended at a house in Kanana Location, Wepener, while two others were intercepted on the road between Kwetla and Wepener with Kamogelo still in their vehicle. These arrests bring the total number of suspects linked to the case to six, including a 42-year-old police sergeant who was previously arrested and charged with kidnapping and extortion.

Police and Community Response

Free State Police Commissioner Lieutenant-General Baile Motswenyane praised the tireless efforts of the police task team, highlighting their unwavering commitment under intense public scrutiny. “The safe recovery of young Kamogelo is a moment of great relief for the family, the community, and all of us,” she said, promising that justice will be served.

Provincial police spokesperson Brigadier Motantsi Makhele confirmed that Kamogelo appeared unharmed and is currently with his family. Although no visible injuries were observed, he will undergo medical treatment to ensure his well-being.

The Kidnapping and Investigation

Kamogelo was abducted while being driven home from Martie du Plessis School, a school for children with special needs, in Bloemfontein. The kidnappers, who deceived the victim by impersonating police officers, demanded a ransom of R7 million for his safe return. This case triggered widespread concern and led to the establishment of a dedicated multidisciplinary task team under the leadership of Mangaung Metro District Commissioner Major General Arthur Peter Adams.

The investigation remains ongoing as police interrogate the suspects to uncover the full extent of the conspiracy and any further links to the police sergeant already in custody.

A Community United in Hope

Throughout Kamogelo’s disappearance, community members, educators, and officials made urgent appeals for information and assistance in locating the teenager. Free State Education MEC Manthlake Julia Maboya repeatedly urged the public to support the police and family in bringing Kamogelo home safely.

Today, that collective hope has been rewarded with the news of Kamogelo’s safe return, a moment of joy amid the challenging circumstances.

The six suspects, including the police sergeant, are expected to appear in court on Monday, June 30, 2025, facing charges related to kidnapping and extortion. Meanwhile, Kamogelo continues to receive medical care and support from his family as he begins the process of recovery and healing.
