On Friday the 11th of August 2023, former President Jacob Zuma’s jail sentence was cancelled, making him a free man.
The developments angered the leader of the Democratic Alliance Party John Steenhuisen. Zuma’s daughter Duduzile had the last laugh at the DA leader.
The Minister of Justice and Correctional Services, Honourable Ronald Lamola granted Zuma a remission to his 15-months jail sentence of 2021.
Zuma was sentenced to 15 months imprisonment by the Constitutional Court for contempt of Court. He had failed to comply with the ruling compelling him to appear before the Zondo Commission.
Lamola said that Zuma was one of the thousands of inmates who have benefitted from remissions of sentences as his department seeks to alleviate overcrowding in South African prisons.
