37 000 South Africans have signed a petition for pitbulls to be banned from homes.

The petition was started by the Sizwe Kupelo foundation after 10 year Storm Nuku was killed by his family ‘s pitbulls in Gqeberha recently.

Other countries that have already banned or restricted the the breed include Australia, Russia, Finland, Denmark, UK and Brazil.

Pitbulls were developed as fighting dogs by genetically selecting dogs that were easily triggered to grab, shake and kill other animals, including other dogs.

Pitbull lovers have also started a petition against the Sizwe Kupelo petition, which has been signed by over 5000 people.

The Pitbull Federation of South Africa said full accountability was needed.

PFSA spokesman, Lehanda Rheeder, told the City Press newspaper that Pitbulls should not be owned by the average person.
