In the morning of the 16th of June in 1976, students from thousands of Secondary Schools from Soweto gathered and marched in protest against the compulsory introduction of Afrikaans as a language of instruction.

The students had organised themselves and were led by the South African students movements and the Soweto Representative Students council.

Protests were peaceful but the police opened fire and over 500 people were killed in the events that followed.

The massacre brought the brutality of the racist Apartheid regime to the attention of the world.
