Sowetan newspaper reported that President Cyril Ramaphosa has suspended Public Protector Busisiwe Mkhwebane with immediate effect.
She will remain suspended until an impeachment process in Parliament has been completed. The impeachment hearings are expected to kick-start on 11 July 2022.
The South African Constitution provided that if for any reason the Public Protector was unable to perform her functions then her deputy would do so.
Mkhwebane’s suspension will not impede the progress of any investigations that are pending or underway.
The Public Protector took to her Twitter page to express her views following the suspension. Ramaphosa had given Mkhwebane until May 26 to give him reasons why he should not suspend her.
