A top leader who supported former Health Minister Zweli Mkhize’s bid for the ANC Presidency was assassinated while travelling home on Wednesday afternoon.

Inkosi Danny Mathenjwa was assassinated in KwaZuluNatal close to the Mozambique border. The prominent traditional leader was shot 16 times.

The car they were travelling in was ambushed and the couple was shot at. Unfortunately Inkosi Danny Mathenjwa passed away on the scene.

His wife was badly injured in the attack and remains in critical condition in hospital. The leader had spent the whole week lobbying for Mkhize to be nominated as ANC President.

Provincial Police Spokesperson Colonel Nqobile Gwala confirmed the sad news saying they suspected that the shooting was a hit since nothing was taken from the couple.

Gwala said details of the investigation will determine whether the murder was a hit or not.

He was amongst the leaders in KwaZuluNatal Province who endorsed Mkhize to accept the Presidential candidate nomination.
