Higher Education Minister Blade Nzimande has warned of a spike in the number of fake colleges offering so-called honours and doctorate degrees.
Nzimande said he is concerned about increasing cases of bogus institutions awarding honorary doctorates, mostly to celebrities.
This comes after businesswoman and reality TV personality Shauwn ‘Mamkhize’ Mkhize was given a doctorate in philosophy by the Good Shepherd College of Religion, Culture and Training, which the department said is unregistered.
Department’s spokesperson Ishmael Mnisi said an investigation would be launched into these illegal operations.
The institution does not have a website or education domain.
The Higher Education department also urged the public to first check an institute’s registration qualifications on the department’s website before applying or paying any fees.
