The African National Congress (ANC) has never lost in KwaZuluNatal but things have changed now. ANC lost in parts of KwaZuluNatal including in Nkandla where former President Jacob Zuma comes from.
Jacob Zuma’s arrest may have led to ANC’s loss in the province. When Zuma was arrested scores of people marched in KwaZuluNatal demanding for his release.
KwaZuluNatal used to be ANC’s stronghold and the Party would win resoundingly. But ANC President Cyril Ramaphosa angered the Zulu when he allowed the courts to arrest Msholozi.
Political analysts blame ANC’s ignorance when Jacob Zuma was arrested. The ruling party lost its municipalities in the province to IFP.
Inkatha Freedom Party won the majority and took over wards and municipalities that were run by ANC. Zuma is widely supported across KwaZuluNatal and his arrest was a shot on the foot by ANC.
The war veterans were also ready to fight on Zuma’s behalf. Protests led to looting and destruction of property across the province.
