Businessman, Sipho Pityana, is blaming former CEO, Maria Ramos, after ABSA failed to appoint him as board chairman.

Pityana is blaming Ramos, who succeeded him as Chair at Anglogold Ashanti, of telling Kuben Naidoo, CEO of the Prudential Authority, about sexual harassment allegations that he faced at Anglogold.

He says Ramos and Kuben are friends.

The Prudential Authority is an entity within the South Africa Reserve Bank which is responsible for approving senior appointments in banks.

ABSA withdrew it’s nomination of Pityana after Naidoo told the board that it would oppose his nomination.

ABSA eventually appointed Sello Moloko as board Chairman.

Pityana has taken the Prudential Authority to court alleging that the regulator acted beyond its powers in how it assessed his candidacy.

Pityana told the Sunday Times that Ramos’s actions are a personal vendetta arising from their days at AngloGold.

Pityana revealed that he differed with Ramos on whether Anglo should move its primary listing overseas and the controversy over the signing on fee of Canadian, Kelvin Dushnidky, who resigned as CEO in 2020.
