Kate Zuma the wife of former President Jacob Zuma died about two decades ago after taking an overdose of sleeping pills.
Frank Chikane who was the Director General in the President’s Office revealed that Kate Zuma called him and she told him that she had taken malaria drugs.
Kate who was married to the deputy president for 18 years was given a state funeral which was addressed by then president Thabo Mbeki and the late ex president Nelson Mandela.
It is believed that Kate took her life due to depression caused by her estranged relationship with Jacob Zuma. She was a mother to 5 of Jacob Zuma’s children.
Chikane said Kate was declared dead on her arrival at the hospital. When the incident happened at the residence of the Vice President, Jacob Zuma had just arrived in town and was at the Union Buildings.
