On Tuesday a virtual hearing was held by the Pietermaritzburg High Court so they could rule on former president Jacob Zuma’s application for a stay of execution of his arrest.

If approved the order to stay if would mean Zuma wouldn’t go to jail whilst waiting for his legal advisors to map the way forward on the decision by the Constitutional Court to send him to jail.

People watched, criticised and took sides as Judge Mnguni and Zuma’s lawyer Dali Mpofu went back and forth on whether the order of stay should be granted or not.

Mpofu argued that Zuma could not be imprisoned without a trial as this goes against the constitution. Mpofu also pointed out that a lower court judge could overturn a higher court ruling.

What really caught people’s attention was an FNB notification that is said to have popped on the judge’s screen. It showed that the judge had received money from an international account.

A lot of people think the money was a bribe Mnguni received in order to rule against former president Jacob Zuma.
