Former South African President Jacob Zuma will qualify for parole after serving a quarter of his 15-month sentence.
Justice Minister Ronald Lamola said at a press briefing on Thursday.
He said this is not a moment of celebration, but a moment of restraint.
The former president handed himself in to police at the Estcourt Correctional Centre late last night.
Correctional Services said he will be treated with dignity throughout his term of incarceration.
