The late Bapedi King Victor Thulare III was finally laid to rest yesterday in Limpopo. Thulare died on the 6th of January from Covid-19 related illnesses.

Only 50 people were allowed at the funeral due to Covid-19 restrictions. These included 40 family members and 10 government officials.

Among the mourners was President Cyril Ramaphosa who arrived to deliver the eulogy. King Thulare the third’s reign lasted several months after he emerged victorious after a kingship battle with his uncle.

The victory brought stability to the Bapedi nation but this could be short lived. The family said the issue of succession will be discussed just after the funeral proceedings.

The death of the King at the age of 40 means a possible succession battle is looming. The former acting King did not attend the funeral but the family insists there is no dispute.

Those who paid tribute included traditional leaders such as the AmaNdebele house. The King was laid to rest at the royal family cemetery behind the royal house.
