Fourty Eight year old Sakhumzi Maqubela opened the first restaurant on the great Vilakazi Street in Soweto in 2004.

Sakhumzi’s parents were entrepreneurs; they sold alcohol to taverns around Soweto and he says that they inspired his passion for business.

In 1986, Sakhumzi moved to Eastern Cape to attend boarding school at Cofimvaba Daliwonga High School where he sold sweets to make extra money.

Sakhumzi says he worked at a bank for 9 years before starting his business after he failed his Matric.

He then registered Sakhumzi Restaurant, resigned from his job and used his pension to fund the business which soon thrived because of his already available customers.
